Artist Interview: Zara Chantelle
Get ready to dive into the world of Zara Chantelle, a talented Indie Pop/Pop-Rock artist known for her emotionally raw lyrics and catchy melodies. In this exclusive interview, Zara opens up about her latest single 'Happiness', a breakup anthem that empowers listeners to choose themselves and find their inner strength. With honesty and vulnerability, Zara shares her creative process, inspirations, and future plans, giving fans a glimpse into her artistry and passion for music.
Tori: What inspired you to write “Happiness” as a breakup anthem, and what message do you hope it conveys to your listeners?
Zara: I was seeing so many of my friends go through tough relationships, and what broke my heart was how few of them were choosing themselves. I felt helpless, so I turned to music. I wrote “Happiness” as something they — and anyone else in that position — could lean on. I want listeners to know that even in the darkest moments, there’s light ahead. Healing is real. It gets better.
Tori: Can you tell us about the writing process behind “Happiness” and how you came up with the idea for this song?
Zara: Funny enough, “Happiness” started as a school assignment. I had no idea it would turn into what it is now. At first, it was just me spilling out a bunch of pent-up feelings in about 30 minutes. But the more I played it, the more it started to shape itself into something deeper — more refined, more intentional. It was like the song already existed, and I just had to catch up to it.
Tori: Your music is described as Indie Pop/Pop-Rock. How do you think your sound fits into the current music landscape?
Zara: I think my sound has a raw, personal edge that blends singer-songwriter storytelling with heavier, more driven pop-rock production. There’s also that Aussie inflection in my voice and phrasing — probably from the artists I grew up listening to. It doesn’t really mimic one specific artist, and I see that as a strength. It makes the music feel more like me.
Tori: What drives your creativity and inspires your songwriting?
Zara: Songwriting is my version of therapy — it’s a daily habit now. For some people it’s journaling, for others it’s the gym. For me, it’s sitting with a guitar or a piano and just letting it out. Being the “therapist friend” can be heavy, so songwriting gives me a place to unload and reflect. It’s my emotional outlet, and it’s how I process the world around me.
Tori: “Happiness” aims to empower teenage girls who have gone through toxic relationships. What do you hope listeners take away from this song, and how do you think it can impact their lives?
Zara: I hope it gives them the courage to put themselves first. Whether they’ve been through a breakup or any situation where they felt small or unseen, I want this song to remind them of their worth. It’s about reclaiming your voice and realizing you’re allowed to walk away — and heal.
Tori: How do you think music can be used as a tool for empowerment and self-expression, especially for young women?
Zara: Music is such a powerful outlet — especially for young women who are often told to quiet down or take up less space. Through music, we can be bold, honest, and completely ourselves. It gives us a way to share our stories and say things we might not otherwise have the chance to. That kind of expression is empowering.
Tori: What are you most looking forward to about releasing “Happiness”?
Zara: Definitely the connection. I’m excited to see how people relate to it and to hear their stories. Knowing that something I created could help someone feel seen — that’s the most rewarding part for me.
Tori: What is your favorite part of performing live?
Zara: The energy. There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of being on stage and feeling the crowd respond. I love that back-and-forth connection — it’s fun, emotional, and totally freeing.
Tori: Can you tell us about your future plans and projects? Are there any new songs or albums in the works?
Zara: Yes! I’m working on releasing an EP by the end of the year. Until then, I’ve got more singles coming out, and I’m planning some shows to bring the songs to life on stage. I can’t wait to share more.
Tori: What do you hope listeners will connect with most about “Happiness,” and how do you think the song’s themes will resonate with your audience?
Zara: Even though it’s about a breakup, the heart of the song is about rediscovering yourself — and that’s something almost everyone goes through in some way. I hope people connect with the message of choosing themselves, especially when it’s hard. It’s about stepping out of something toxic and back into your own power.
Tori: How does “Happiness” fit into your overall body of work, and what do you think sets this song apart from your previous releases?
Zara: Lyrically, a lot of my songs are emotionally raw — but they’re wrapped in upbeat, pop-rock energy. “Happiness” continues that contrast, but it stands out because of how direct and unfiltered it is. Lines like “won’t have to get drunk to feel a bit of happiness” hit hard. And the Aussie edge in the vocal delivery makes it feel distinct from anything else out there.
Tori: Can you leave us with your favorite inspirational quote?
Zara: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” It’s simple, but it’s shaped so many of my choices. You have to go for it, even if it’s scary!
