Despite his age, Basscat15 shows maturity and musical insight far beyond his years. We caught up with him to talk about his creative process, his inspirations, and how he stays true to himself through music.
Q. Congrats on your new song! Can you tell us what “Searching for Yourself” is about?
A. Searching for Yourself is about being who you are and embracing yourself, even in hard situations.
Q. What made you want to write a song that helps people believe in themselves?
A. I made the song to encourage people to be themselves because I saw that many people aren’t, and they should be.
Q. How did you come up with the music for the song? Did it start with a guitar riff, lyrics, or something else?
A. I came up with the music by just trying out different chord patterns to see which ones sounded good. Then I built everything else while making the song.
Q. What is your favorite part about playing guitar?
A. My favorite part is when I can play something really well and relax while listening to it. I feel happy knowing I can now play it for other people too.
Q. What do you love most about making music?
A. What I like most is the process. It’s pretty interesting to make a song, even though it can be tiring.
Q. Who are some musicians or bands that inspire you?
A. Honestly, no bands or musicians specifically inspire me, but when I come up with a chord pattern, I sometimes use strumming patterns from songs I’ve heard.
Q. How do you feel when you're performing on stage?
A. On stage, I feel pretty confident. But when I have to play a solo, I get really nervous that I might mess it up.
Q. What do your friends and family think of your music?
A. My friends and family like my music. Other people on social media think it's good too, and they enjoy it.
Q. If you could play a concert anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A. I don’t really know since I’m not familiar with different venues, but I’d probably want to play outside of the U.S. because it would be interesting to perform in another country.
Q. Do you ever get nervous before releasing a new song? How do you deal with that?
A. No, I don’t get nervous because I know people will like it—they usually do.
Q. What’s the best advice someone has given you about making music or being yourself?
A. Probably one of my music teachers. He helps me with piano and drum parts, and I learn a lot from him.
Q. If someone your age feels like they’re not good enough, what would you tell them?
A. I’d tell them to always believe in themselves. There’s always something they’re good at.
Q. What's something fun you like to do when you're not making music?
A. I love hanging out with my friends, going for walks, and swimming.
Q. What’s your favorite color, and does it inspire any of your music or stage looks?
A. My favorite color is blue, and it influences my stage look because I often wear dark blue shirts with cats on them when I perform.
Q. How do you see your music changing or growing as you get older?
A. As I grow older, I think my music will have more solos, more complex structures, and cooler-sounding parts. I also see myself writing more fully composed songs.
