Artist Interview: Eliza May
Eliza May’s latest single, “Money,” delivers a funk-infused indie pop sound paired with refreshingly honest lyrics about financial strain. Known for her vibrant personality, genre-blending style, and irresistibly catchy hooks, Eliza brings both depth and joy to everything she creates. We caught up with her to talk songwriting, self-belief, her colorful stage presence, and what fans can expect next.
Tori: Your new single “Money” tackles financial struggles with a playful and sassy tone. What inspired you to write about this topic?
Eliza: "Money" was inspired by how I was feeling back in 2021. Like many people, I was still feeling the effects of lockdown and COVID, and financially, I wasn't in the best position—even though I was working all the time. As a self-employed musician and a girl in my early 20s, trying to make ends meet nearly felt impossible. Life felt ridiculously difficult and frustrating, with very little support from the systems in place. I was constantly manifesting a better future, and from there, I started writing "Money."
Tori: How do you balance the lighthearted elements of your music with serious themes like financial struggle?
Eliza: I usually balance things out by making the instrumentation sound upbeat and summery while writing lyrics that feel raw, down-to-earth, and to the point. I always want my songs to sound fun but still connect with the listener. Blending lighthearted, funky chords with emotional or relatable lyrics is the best way to do that. I listen to a lot of summery indie pop, so that influence naturally shines through. Lyrically, I always write from the heart, which is probably why my words end up being a bit deeper or more serious.
Tori: Your music has been described as "poetically sassy" and "playfully punchy." Can you tell us about your songwriting process?
Eliza: It really differs from song to song. Sometimes a lyric or line will just pop into my head, and I'll grab my guitar or head to the piano and start experimenting with chords to match the vibe. Other times, I’ll start with a chord progression and then find a theme or topic that suits it. Once I’ve got the guitar or piano part and lyrics down, I bring the song to my band—they jam along and create their own parts. Songwriting for me is kind of like meditation. I get completely lost in it when I’m alone, and when I’m with the band, it becomes more experimental and collaborative. I’m always inspired by their ideas!
Tori: You've supported notable acts like Gabrielle. What's the biggest piece of advice you've received from a fellow artist?
Eliza: The best advice that’s stuck with me is to keep going and believe in your dreams. As long as you’re doing your best and taking even one small step each day toward your goals, opportunities will come. It’s something I remind myself of through the highs and lows. Being an independent artist isn’t easy, but when I look back, I can already see the progress. The journey has been worth it—even with the twists and turns!
Tori: “Money” marks a different direction for your sound. What inspired you to experiment with a bolder, funkier indie pop style?
Eliza: I’ve always loved experimenting with different genres, and when I wrote "Money," I had just started listening to Olivia Dean. Her sound is clearly pop, but it also pulls from funk, R&B, and jazz. I think I subconsciously took inspiration from her and started playing around with chord voicings and rhythms I hadn’t tried before. Sometimes you just have to step into the unknown and see where it takes you—that’s exactly what happened with "Money."
Tori: Artists like Olivia Dean, Ripe, and Cassia have been cited as influences. How do you think your music fits into the indie pop landscape?
Eliza: Even though my music has its own unique flair, I think it fits perfectly into the indie pop world! Most indie pop tracks are fun, catchy, and full of funky instrumentation—my sound definitely matches that. You can expect slick guitar riffs, enchanting keys, and contagiously catchy lyrics. I like to genre-bend a bit, too, so while my songs sit in the indie pop realm, they also draw influence from other styles and artists.
Tori: What can fans expect from your upcoming live shows, including your performance at DevaFest?
Eliza: High energy, wholesome fun, and hopefully a new favorite song! My band and I always aim to make our setlists enjoyable for both us and the audience, and we love teasing unreleased tracks. We pour our hearts into every show and try to make the experience feel like a ray of sunshine—positive vibes all around!
Tori: How do you hope listeners will respond to the message of “Money,” particularly in terms of self-belief?
Eliza: I really hope people feel empowered by the song. "Money" is about believing in your dreams, even when times are tough. The economy and the systems we have can be frustrating, but if we keep going and believe in ourselves, I truly think we’ll get to where we’re meant to be. I want the song to remind people that every step counts, no matter how small.
Tori: You're loved for your bubbly personality and unforgettably catchy lyrics. How do you think your personality shines through your music?
Eliza: I’m naturally a glass-half-full kind of person, so I think my positivity comes through in my music. Whether I’m writing about love, empowerment, or real-life struggles, I always try to spread a bit of light. That’s probably why even the sadder lyrics end up paired with bright, upbeat sounds—like in “Edge of This,” which is about an ex who won’t leave me alone!
Tori: Can you walk us through the creative and recording process for “Money”?
Eliza: I first wrote "Money" in my bedroom with just my electric guitar and a notes app in 2021. Once I was happy with it, I brought it to my band, and we jammed out the parts together. We recorded a demo in late 2023 and sent it to our producer, Thomas Davies. Then, over three Sundays in February 2024, we hit the studio and recorded four new tracks, including "Money." Starting with drums and bass, then adding keys, guitar, and vocals, the whole process helped elevate the sound. It was my first proper studio experience since 2017, and it made such a difference.
Tori: What role do you think music plays in reflecting societal issues like the cost of living?
Eliza: Music gives artists a voice—a chance to share opinions and experiences in a poetic, relatable way. In a world where only the loudest often get heard, music levels the playing field. It sheds light on issues that need attention. I hope songs like "Money" can reflect others' views and act as a voice for change.
Tori: You've performed at LOOPFEST and The Jam Factory in Hereford. What are some of your favorite live performance experiences?
Eliza: I loved those shows, but my favorite performance was at LeeStock Festival last year. I’d taken six months off to focus on recording, and that show was our first time back. The energy, the crowd, and the confidence I felt—it was all so special. It kicked off one of our best festival seasons to date. I’ve never felt more alive on stage!
Tori: How do you stay true to your artistic vision while navigating the commercial music industry?
Eliza: I just stay true to myself. I don’t have a persona—what you see is what you get. I think as long as I stay grounded and passionate, my artistic vision comes through naturally. My goal has always been to bring joy to people through music, and as long as I’m doing that, I’m living the dream.
Tori: Can you share any memorable moments from your performances or experiences in the music industry?
Eliza: Supporting Kate Nash was a dream come true. She was so kind, chatted with us before the show, and we even danced on stage with her! Afterward, people asked us to sign their tickets—such a surreal moment. Another unforgettable experience was performing on the main stage at Pub in the Park in 2023, opening for Soul II Soul. It was our biggest stage yet, and the love we received was overwhelming and beautiful.
Tori: Your colorful hair and stage presence have become part of your signature style. How do you think your visual aesthetic contributes to your music?
Eliza: My look definitely complements my sound. Since my music is upbeat and fun, I want my visuals to reflect that energy. I love wearing colorful, eye-catching outfits that help bring my performances to life. I don’t take life too seriously, and I think my style shows that!
Tori: How does it feel to be recognized as an emerging artist in the indie pop scene?
Eliza: It’s honestly an honor. I’ve always dreamed of singing on stage and connecting with people through music. To be able to do that, and to be supported by blogs, radio, festivals, and fans, is magical. I’m incredibly grateful and excited for what’s still to come!
Tori: How do you think “Money” will resonate with listeners who may be facing similar financial struggles?
Eliza: I think a lot of younger people will relate to "Money" because they’re living through the same challenges. I hope the song gives them motivation to keep pushing forward and dreaming big. It's a song to scream when times are hard—to help you feel stronger and more confident.
Tori: What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to make a name for themselves in the music industry?
Eliza: Put yourself out there. Reach out to people, play shows, share your work online—most people won’t know who you are unless you show them. And just as important: take care of your mental health. Prioritize rest and don’t burn yourself out. You can’t pour from an empty cup!
Tori: What can fans expect from your music in the coming months and beyond? Are there any tours, EPs, or albums coming up soon?
Eliza: There’s so much coming! We’re releasing another new song in the next few months, and we’re finalizing a new EP, too. Keep an eye on socials for announcements! You can also catch us at DevaFest on the Cheshire Cat stage on Sunday, August 10th.
Tori: Are there any specific themes or messages you hope to explore further in your future music releases?
Eliza: Right now, I’m just writing from the heart based on my experiences and the people around me. I want to keep creating music that resonates. I’m also excited to collaborate with other indie pop artists to explore new sounds and creative ideas together!
