Artist Interview: Chlo3pie

An artist to watch, Chlo3pie is making her mark on the music scene with her vibrant aesthetic and catchy tunes. From being discovered on TikTok to having her music featured on BBC Introducing, this 20-year-old is just getting started. We sat down with her to talk about her creative process, inspirations, and what’s next!

Tori: How did you get started in music, and who were some of your early influences?

Chlo3pie: I think my first pop girl love was Ariana Grande. The way she constructs her vocals and harmonies influences me a lot. I weirdly grew up to punk music and alternative sounds, which I think gave me the courage to be different. The way I got started properly was quite serendipitous; I posted a cover of Ariana Grande's "Focus" and got approached by a local producer! But aside from what you guys can see, I've been at it for a long time.

Tori: Your music is described as having bright visuals and a focus on "everything pink and sparkly." What inspires this aesthetic, and how does it translate into your sound?

Chlo3pie: I think pink was born into me. I’ve struggled a lot within my mind, but at its core, it is pink and sparkly and bright, and it just comes out. It reminds me of being called bubbly by my year four teacher, and it’s stuck with me. My natural vibe is like that, and I think because that’s my nature, it comes out in what I do creatively (visually and sonically).

Tori: How does it feel to have your music featured on BBC Introducing?

Chlo3pie: Me and my best friend stood there for a minute in shock. It's my first real achievement as an artist. I was like, "oh, okay, this is real now." I hope this year continues to bless me.

Tori: Can you tell us about the creative process behind your debut single?

Chlo3pie: The producer I was working with genuinely just looped the track and let me lay down the stream of thoughts in my head. I needed a little help getting started as I was a bit nervous, but we got there. Once I got past the initial block, I was spitting bars, haha.

Tori: What was the inspiration behind your upcoming single, "Hawaii," and what can fans expect from it?

Chlo3pie: I got approached by a producer on TikTok offering me a free mix, and that night I worked from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. making it! It was very much a song straight from my brain, spewing it out naturally. I got the mix back the next night!!!! At the time, I was wondering how I could make my music more genuine to me, so why not make it about the fact I don't like to party or drink.

Tori: You're a young artist at 20 years old. How has your age and experiences influenced your music so far?

Chlo3pie: I really love this question because when I was like 16, everyone thought I was so much older. I was achieving so much for my age as a model, and then it all kind of slowed down, and when I got to the age they all thought I was, it wasn’t as cool as I thought. I think when I was 18-19, I believed I was behind, but the truth is I am still the youngest person at most tables I sit at… Now I'm 20, I'm just insanely proud of myself and believe everything is in divine timing.

Tori: How do you feel your UK background influences your music?

Chlo3pie: You know, I didn’t think it did until I started making music. I love, love, love K-pop, so I really thought my music would sound similar. I guess it’s reminiscent of bright 2019 era K-pop, but if it was in North West London. But my sound and my thought process will always be very, very British. At the end of the day, music is a universal language, and I want everyone to feel the light and happy feelings I feel making it.

Tori: Are there any particular themes or messages you hope to convey through your music?

Chlo3pie: Lightness. There’s so much darkness in the world; I just want to connect with people and have a good time.

Tori: What has been the most surprising or rewarding part of releasing your music so far?

Chlo3pie: Hmmmm. I don’t think I realized how much I’ll have to become an influencer as well as an artist, so that was surprising and kind of not natural for me to get into. But the most rewarding is reaching new people and hearing people’s feedback! I know I shouldn’t live for the validation, but man, is it good.

Tori: Can you walk us through a typical day in the studio?

Chlo3pie: I always get really anxious before going to the studio, so I mostly record in my bedroom… But when I did for "Little Dress," I'd be so fine once I got there! I would make sure to keep hydrated and bring a fidget toy!

Tori: What are your goals for the rest of the year, both musically and personally?

Chlo3pie: Musically, I would like to be a support act for a tour and get more shows! Personally, I want to relax more, ride the waves.

Tori: Who are some artists you would love to collaborate with in the future?

Chlo3pie: As a born fangirl, I have a long list, haha. Number one will always be Bangchan of Stray Kids, although by the time I'm successful, I'm not sure if Stray Kids will still be together! I’d also like to collab with Katseye, dearalice, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Caity Baser, and I could add soooo many more!

Tori: What advice would you give to other young artists who are just starting out?

Chlo3pie: I always say this whenever anyone asks me for advice: just start, and you can perfect it later. Just start! It helped me as a perfectionist, too.

Tori: How do you approach the visual aspect of your music, such as music videos and album art?

Chlo3pie: For me, whenever I listen to a song, the visuals appear in my head. I’ll make a Pinterest board to get the vision from my head into something other people can see!

Tori: What can fans look forward to in the coming months? Are there plans for an EP or an album?

Chlo3pie: Oh, 100% an EP is on the way!
