Artist Interview: DXT Christian

Melbourne-based artist DXT Christian (now known as Đex) has made a global impact by seamlessly blending the boundaries of Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, and Electronic music. With a stream count in the millions, his instrumental-heavy approach proves that powerful production can carry as much emotional weight as lyrics. In this interview, he discusses his creative process, the influence of his local scene, and his vision for the future as he moves into a more vocal-driven, Dance/Electronic sound.

Tori: Your music spans across Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, and Electronic. How do you balance these diverse genres, and what ties your unique sound together across all of them?

DXT: I treat genres like different colors on a palette. Each track is an experiment in blending them without losing the emotion. What ties it together is the atmosphere I create.

Tori: Can you walk us through your creative process when you start building a new beat? Where do you find inspiration for these unique sounds?

DXT: I usually start with a feeling. It could come from a movie scene, a conversation, or even silence. From there, I layer drums or synths to capture that emotion.

Tori: Accumulating over a million streams worldwide is a major milestone. What has that journey been like, and what do you attribute that global reach to?

DXT: It’s been surreal. I think the global reach comes from honesty. People everywhere connect with authenticity, even if they don’t speak the same language.

Tori: As an artist based in Melbourne, Victoria, how has the local music scene influenced your sound, and how do you feel your music stands out within that community?

DXT: Melbourne’s scene is diverse and experimental, which pushes me to keep innovating. I stand out by leaning into a darker, more cinematic soundscape compared to the brighter, festival-driven music here.

Tori: What can fans expect from your next project or release? Are there any new sonic territories you're planning to explore?

DXT: Expect vocal-driven tracks in the future. I’m pushing into more Dance/Electronic and R&B, especially rebuilding a new image from to “Đex”.

Tori: In what ways are you challenging the norms in today's music landscape?

DXT: By proving instrumental-heavy music can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with mainstream vocal tracks. I want to remind people that production alone can carry as much emotion as lyrics.

Tori: Which artists or producers, from any genre, have had the most significant impact on you and your decision to pursue music?

DXT: Artists like Daniel Di Angelo, isq, and QMIIR shaped how I view sound.

Tori: How important is the concept of "connecting with listeners on a personal level" to your work, and how do you achieve that through your lyrics or production?

DXT: It’s everything. Even without words, music can trigger memories and feelings. I achieve that by producing tracks that feel cinematic.

Tori: If you had to choose one song from your catalog that you feel best represents you as an artist right now, which one would it be and why?

DXT: Probably “hook”. It captures where I am sonically — dark, layered, and emotional — while hinting at where I’m headed.

Tori: Beyond music production and performance, what other creative outlets or interests do you have that feed back into your artistry?

DXT: Fashion plays a big role for me. I also draw inspiration from writing and visual art, anything that sparks imagination.

Tori: What is the biggest lesson you've learned about the music industry since you started accumulating global streams?

DXT: That consistency is more powerful. Streams come and go, but building trust with listeners takes patience.

Tori: For aspiring producers or artists who look up to your success with instrumental work, what is the one piece of advice you would offer them?

DXT: Don’t chase the algorithm. If your music makes you feel something real, it will connect with others.

Tori: If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and what kind of track would you want to create?

DXT: I’d love to work with Daniel Di Angelo.

Tori: What are your long-term goals for Đex? Where do you see your music career heading in the next five years?

DXT: I see myself building a world around my sound, all tied to one identity.

Tori: What message do you hope listeners take away from your music, particularly those who are just discovering your sound?

DXT: My music is about turning raw emotion into something you can carry with strength. My message, “Listen to my music, not because I tell you to, but because you’re curious to listen”.
