Artist Interview: Gabby Mazza
We caught up with rising teenage artist Gabby Mazza to discuss her musical journey. A self-taught songwriter from Florida, Gabby is making a name for herself with her debut singles and plans for a full-length album. From her early inspirations to her goals for the future, Gabby shares what it's like to balance life as a typical teenager with her passion for music.
Tori: You're a young artist with big dreams. What first inspired you to start writing and performing music?
Gabby: When I started listening to Poppy Playtime songs. My first song that I ever wrote was a Poppy Playtime song. But I didn't like how it turned out, so I stopped writing songs for a while. Then, back in January, I started writing songs again.
Tori: You're originally from Alabama and moved to Florida. How has this change of scenery influenced your music and creative process?
Gabby: Well, I was born in Alabama, and when I was five months old, I moved to Florida. Then, when I was five, I moved to New York state. But when I was nine, I moved back to Florida. And I never had a sense of music at these times.
Tori: You've released two songs, "All For Nothing" and "3AM." Can you tell us about the story behind each of them?
Gabby: "All For Nothing" is a song about giving up on someone and thinking it was all for nothing. "3AM" is a song about thinking you blocked someone, and they are calling you consistently at 3 a.m. and you never wanna see them again.
Tori: You've mentioned you want to start learning guitar. How do you think adding an instrument will change your approach to songwriting?
Gabby: Well, I wanted to do song covers on my social media to get more recognition. And when I think of lyrics, odds are, I need to make chords.
Tori: Live performances are a big step for any artist. How do you plan to overcome your stage fright to get out there and connect with a live audience?
Gabby: I'll start off by practicing in my room and imagining a lot of people there. Then, I'll post some on the internet to get my voice out there. When I feel ready, I'll start looking for venues to perform at.
Tori: Your debut single, "All For Nothing," has sped-up and slowed-down versions. What was the creative decision behind releasing these alternative versions?
Gabby: I've always been a fan of Nightcore and Daycore. I was testing these out, and when I heard them, I knew I had to release them.
Tori: You're in the process of creating your first studio album. What can fans expect from the album's sound and themes?
Gabby: The theme is gonna be more angst, and the sound is gonna be a mix of lots of genres, like rock, pop, slow, sad, ect.
Tori: Who are some of your musical influences across the pop and rock genres?
Gabby: My rock influence is definitely Bailey Spinn. And my pop influence is without a doubt Justin Bieber.
Tori: At just 15, you've already started planning an entire album. What has been the biggest challenge in this process so far?
Gabby: Finding time to work on it while I have school.
Tori: What's it like balancing your life as a typical teenager with your passion for pursuing a music career?
Gabby: Well, not a lot of people at my school know I'm a music artist, except my closest friends, so it's not really that hard. But the only issue is school. It gets in the way of me concentrating on my career.
Tori: You've said one of your biggest accomplishments is simply being a music artist. What does that title mean to you at this stage in your journey?
Gabby: Because I've always wanted to just have music that I make to enjoy. And I wanted to make a difference. So, just being a music artist means the world to me, and it's such an honor to have this opportunity.
Tori: Where do you see yourself and your music in the next five years? What are your ultimate goals for your career?
Gabby: I see myself already having done a tour, many concerts, and having meet and greets with fans. And my goals for my career would definitely be just having the most wonderful fans in the world.
Tori: If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Gabby: Justin Bieber, because his voice just gives off that "I wanna make this happen" energy.
Tori: What advice would you give to other young artists who are just starting out and might be facing similar challenges, like stage fright or getting their music out there?
Gabby: Hmm. I would definitely say, "Practice on your own. You don't need recognition to start as a music artist. Just keep believing in yourself."
