Artist Interview: Lydia May

Lydia May, the Melbourne-born, London-based alt-pop artist, is quickly becoming known for her powerhouse vocals, confessional songwriting, and electrifying stage presence. With a sound that blends the raw emotion of '90s alt-rock with contemporary pop sensibility, she fearlessly invites listeners to confront their "inner drama." We sat down with her to discuss her creative journey, the influence of moving abroad, and what's next for her dedicated fanbase, the 'Maybelles.'

Tori: Can you describe the moment you realized music was your escape and confidant?

Lydia: Singing in choir unleashed an intuitive sensory escapism for back then a very lonely emotional kid. I’ve followed music ever since and the magic of connection.

Tori: How did the experience of moving to London as a girl from Melbourne and confronting loneliness directly contribute to the bold and confident contemporary discography you've created?

Lydia: Anyone who’s moved away from where they grow up knows you lose that feeling of ‘home’. It becomes a part of the places you go and your personal growth. It’s exciting and challenging and lonely. I made a choice to hold hands with the fear and self-doubt and go for what I want anyway. My internal compass has always pointed directly to music, and that drives me wherever I am.

Tori: Your music is said to invite listeners to unleash their inner drama. What does "inner drama" mean to you, and how do you channel that into your confessional style storytelling?

Lydia: The inner drama is that of shame and self-doubt, with whom I’m very used to. Music and creative freedom unleash any personal shackles I inflict. Live music is the epicentre of this and why I’m so excited to start playing my first big shows with a band. My message is to enjoy yourself, inner drama and all.

Tori: The press calls you a "natural performer" who is "infectiously excited and engaging." What do you do just before you step on stage to tap into that high-energy state?

Lydia: Well, I’m glad that’s the current tone, I just love tearing up a stage. It takes a lot to get people in a room and the one thing I can do is hold a crowd. The energy is there for the taking, and there are no rules on stage except give 'em a show. I try to focus on my body and the knowledge that it’s about to be great, because I’m gonna make it so, I’m in control. I get nervous until I'm side stage, then it’s f*cking go time.

Tori: What is one personal story or heartache that you turned into a song that you feel has resonated most deeply with your listeners?

Lydia: "Prom’s" story is of heartbreak but also taking yourself home, which we all have to do. The disappointment of a failed night or someone we used to love. I’m really proud of myself for writing that song and being so honest whilst I was hurting.

Tori: What is the significance of the name 'Maybelles'?

Lydia: I thought it was cute! It’s got a ring to it (literally) and I love that 'belle' means beauty. Not that I’m French but the sentiment is there.

Tori: What can the Maybelles—and new listeners—expect from your next musical release?

Lydia: A story of resurrection and the gritty, unlinear evolution that is healing.
